Computer Ownership

As you probably know, the computer has become a ubiquitous tool for artists, designers, and scholars, who use it routinely to communicate, create, and collaborate, as an integral part of their process. Many of our students have found that having a portable computer available to them at any time can help to make the best use of their time, and create a more seamless flow of work and ideas from classroom to studio to presentation. With this in mind, the School of Art + Design recommends that students consider the purchase of a notebook computer.

The School of Art + Design has a multi-platform computing environment. Approximately 75% of the computers in use at the School are Apple Macintosh computers running OS X, and 25% are Dell computers running Windows XP. Students have access to a wide selection of computer technology in Art + Design Laboratories. For more information, check the Art + Design Equipment and Software Overview.

Students considering the purchase of a computer should consult with faculty in their intended program of study. The variation of work produced by Art + Design students requires diverse and specialized computing needs. For instance, the School's labs utilize video editing software that will only run on Macintosh computers, while the 3D modeling and CAD applications will only run on Windows. Before investing in a computer, new students may find it more judicious to wait until the end of their freshman year to make a more informed choice about the type and level of computer that they will need.

Wireless Internet and Campus Network access is available throughout most of the Art + Design Building, as well as other locations on and off campus. For convenient network access, students should purchase their notebook computer with wireless network capabilities. For information on how to connect, visit the CITES Wireless Homepage.
