Printing Guidelines + Info
The following guidelines and information will help you print using the School of Art + Design's resources.
- Flatten all layers and remove unnecessary content, delete all elements and items located outside the desired print area. If you need a specific amount of white space around your document, include it as part of your image.
- It's more reliable to physically add white space around an image in Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign than to try to adjust print driver margin settings to get blank space to surround your image.
- Print documents from files stored locally on the workstation's hard drive and check links when using InDesign and Illustrator.
- If you link to external files such as fonts or images, verify that this content is available to your document, and copy all files to the local hard drive (don"t link from a CD, USB drive, or server volume). To avoid missing images or bad fonts, always check and Re-link image files and use Find Fonts to verify your typefaces.
- Review the size and cost of your print job prior to requesting output. Laser prints proceed without releasing, so be sure to check all printing details before requesting laser output.
- Inkjet prints will not proceed until you go to an Inkjet Release Station, login, select and release the print request.
- INKJETS: for best results, save or export your file as a (not "downsampled") PDF and print from Adobe Acrobat Professional.
- Printing directly from Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator will usually work, but these three aren't as reliable as Acrobat printing a PDF. PDF means "Portable Document Format" and when you create your PDF, do not "downsample" your file to retain the integrity and resolution of the original image. Do NOT use Apple"s Preview application because it does not communicate properly to the inkjets and will only print a Letter-sized portion of the intended document.
- INKJETS: always setup and request your inkjet prints in Portrait orientation .
- Configure your inkjet paper size for Portrait only. Rotate the image to vertical, before entering the Print menu. To avoid potential errors, never use Landscape or auto-rotate settings when printing to the inkjets.
- INKJETS: verify and do not exceed the maximum width of the printer's paper roll.
- Each inkjet printer uses roll-fed paper with various maximum imaging widths. Check the paper widths and media types listed for each printer before sending a file to an inkjet printer. Document sizes close to or larger than a roll width can result in your image being cropped or rejected.
- LASERS: use LETTER or TABLOID only when selecting paper size for laser printers.
- Laser printers (Xerox 7700, hp9000) have only Letter or Tabloid sizes available in the cassette paper trays. Xerox 7700 color laser printers will reject any jobs that are not Letter or Tabloid sheet sizes. You can use Landscape or Portrait orientations with the laser printers and they can print on both sides of a sheet.
- Ask for help!
- If you are unsure about how to setup your print, consult with the computer HelpDesk lab assistant.
