UIUC School of Art + Design Portfolio Review Process

The second part of the application process involves submitting a portfolio of your creative work to the School of Art + Design.

The Portfolio Submission Form for Incoming Freshman should be downloaded, completed, and included with your submitted art portfolio. If you are unable to download this form please call 217-333-6632 to request one by mail.

The portfolio is a collection of your recent work that illustrates your ability for advanced study as an art and design practitioner, educator or historian. It should demonstrate your ability to create and communicate ideas visually using various mediums and technical processes. The portfolio should consist of 10 examples of your recent work. Examples of work to include are drawings, paintings, photographs, digital artwork, designs (product and other objects), ceramics, jewelry/metals, sculpture, textiles and video. Work illustrating proficiency in a variety of mediums is encouraged. Drawings from real life observation are preferable to those copied from photographs or other images. These drawings can be exploratory, i.e. spontaneous or more finished.

This portfolio can be presented in one of the following formats: CD-ROM or 35mm slides (for specific directions, see Portfolio Submission Form for Incoming Freshman). Mail the CD-ROM or slides to: Undergraduate Admissions, School of Art + Design, UIUC, 408 East Peabody Drive, Champaign, IL 61820 (clearly mark your application portfolio). If you need it to be returned, please include an appropriately sized stamped, self-addressed return envelope.

Faculty in the School of Art + Design will evaluate the portfolio and the outcome will be forwarded to the Office of Admissions, who will then contact you. All offers for a place in the School of Art + Design depend on you meeting the University’s entrance requirements along with a positive assessment of your portfolio.

Notification dates: December 14, 2007 and March 15, 2008. If you apply (including the art portfolio) during the Priority Filing Period (September 1 – November 10), you will be notified of your admission status by December 14, 2007. If you apply after November 10, 2007 you will be notified of a decision by March 15, 2008.
