UIUC Office of Admissions and Records Application Form

The University of Illinois application form can be completed online or a hard copy application form can be requested from the Office of Admissions and Records, 217-333- 0302. Only complete applications will be considered for admission (include all collegiate transcripts — include high school transcripts and ACT/SAT scores if applicable [see transfer admission requirements above]).

UIUC School of Art + Design Admissions Process

The second part of the application process involves submitting a portfolio of your creative work to the School of Art + Design. We encourage you to submit your application form and fees to the Office of Admissions at the same time as you send your portfolio to the School of Art + Design.

Portfolio Review

The Portfolio Review Request form should be downloaded, completed, and mailed to the School of Art + Design (address is on the form). Please check which degree(s) you wish to be considered for. Separate faculty panels representing each of the various programs review the portfolio of each applicant that checked their program. If you only check 1 program, only that program will review your application. Applicants who receive a positive review of the portfolio will progress on to the second stage of the process, the interview or other follow up procedure. If you are unable to download this form please call 217-333-6632 to request one by mail.

The Transfer Portfolio Submission Form should be downloaded, completed, and included with your Portfolio Review Request Form and digital art portfolio. If you are unable to download this form please call 217-333-6632 to request one by mail.

Portfolio Contents. While there is no fixed requirement for the number of pieces to be included in the portfolio, the recommended number is 10-15 (plus a maximum of 5 detail images). Portfolios should include examples of both two- and three-dimensional design and freehand and/or mechanical drawing, and demonstrate areas of strength for the degree(s) you are applying. Be very selective. Edit the contents of the portfolio carefully so as to emphasize quality, not quantity.

Format. Submit your portfolio on a CD-ROM. All still images must be saved as JPEGs with the file size no larger than 500 KB each. Movie files must be in QuickTime format (Sorenson or H.264 compression) with a file size ~50 MB. If submitting a movie larger than 50 MB, an excerpt or "trailer" should also be included and entitled as such. Corresponding files could count as "one item."

Criteria for Evaluation. Portfolios will be evaluated in terms of the quality of candidates’ skills, artistic perception, theoretical knowledge, and of their sense of composition, form, imaginative imagery, technical skills, and ability to articulate and communicate ideas.

Interviews. Applicants whose portfolios have received a positive review from one or more programs may be required to participate in interviews or another follow up procedure conducted by faculty panels from the respective programs. Transfer students who are close enough to participate in this process in person (preferred) must sign up for an appointment with each program to which they are seeking admission. Interview sign-up sheets may be posted outside the locations listed below. If you are not close enough to schedule an appointment in person, it is your responsibility to contact the interviewer indicated in your portfolio acceptance email within the stated timeframe to schedule a phone interview.
