Following an introduction to Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, this course
will examine art made in the last twenty-five years. We will explore topics
including the emergence of new media alongside the cyclical so-called death
and return of painting; the economics of the art market and the increasing
ubiquity of art fairs; the politics of representation and the NEA culture wars; and
the efflorescence of the aesthetic in recent years.

This advanced seminar will consider how ideas of geography—and of places imagined as
physical spaces as well as political spheres—have been transformed in the last century. Indeed, asking not only what, but where, was Modernism, we will investigate questions of site-specificity, identity, globalization, and cultural production and assimilation. Topics will additionally comprise public art, community-based art, and landscape art, among others.

This course, taught by the Center's Associate Director with participation
from various members of the museum staff, is concerned with advanced theoretical
issues of art museum work, including current practices and issues. Topics covered
include the history of museums in America, collections, curatorial issues,
educational program planning, trustee relations, public outreach, fundraising,
budgeting, and staff organization. It will also focus on actual experiences
in The Phillips Collection's galleries as well as field trips to other area
art museums. This course will count for seminar credit in the graduate art
history program at the University of Illinois.

An advanced seminar discussing issues related to contemporary art practice.
Discussion and readings are guided by a practicing curator. Seminar explores
aesthetics, criticism, art history, and recent work. There will be regular
readings of theoretical and art historical texts as well articles from art
journals. May include guest lectures by artists, curators, or historians
and visits to museums and galleries. Enrollment will be limited to 15
students in order to ensure active participation by all students in
the class.

This hands-on studio course is taught by a practicing artist and will offer
both individualized and group instruction in drawing and collage techniques.
In addition, each class session will devote some time to art historical overviews
of the uses of drawing and multimedia collage by such groups as modern and
contemporary artists, graphic novelists, outsider artists, children and
musicians. This class is open to students of all levels of artistic ability.

This course will examine, discuss and execute the ideas of contemporary photographers. Students will be asked to bring some kind of camera of their own to the class. Technical skills of camera operation and printing will be taught in conjunction with studies of the work of contemporary photographers. These include in-class presentation of influences, ideas, material choices and problem solving techniques for photographers. Photographic assignments will be given and critiqued; we will also discuss the work of important contemporary photographers.
